Linux
Linux is an operating system. An operating system is what is installed on a computer that handles running other programs and doing basic tasks like communicating with the hard drive and monitor.
Linux, Macintosh OSX, Windows and Unix are all operating systems. Linux is different from the others in that it is free to use, share and modify. It isn't the only free operating system, you could also try out GNU Hurd, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenDOS, OpenVMS or a few others. Linux is the most widely used however, and it comes with the most commonly desired tools.
